Four injured in Gaithersburg collision

Four people were treated at local hospitals after a car struck a curb in a single-vehicle collision Tuesday night in Gaithersburg, police said.

The accident occurred around 10:50 p.m., when the driver hit a curb, sending the SUV into a grassy area near St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Subsequently, the vehicle struck a tree and overturned. The collision is under investigation, and it is still unknown why the vehicle struck the curb in the first place.

As a result of the accident, everyone inside the vehicle was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Two have been critically injured: Kendra Frederick (the driver), was taken to the Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore with life-threatening injuries.

Additionally, the right-rear passenger was also taken to the Baltimore trauma center and is in critical condition. Investigators believe that neither was wearing seat belts.

The front-seat and left-rear passengers were luckier, as they were only treated for injuries and released from local hospitals, police said. Investigators believe both were wearing seat belts.

Two arrested after crash and shoplifting

Two men were arrested after allegedly shoplifting from a Wheaton shopping center. They were trying to flee, when they got into an accident with their stolen getaway car. They are now in custody, facing multiple charges.

In relation to shoplifting charges, the search of the vehicle produced about $7000 worth of property stolen from both JC Penney and Target, according to police. The Ford Exploder had been stolen from Washington, D.C. that morning as well.

But other charges involve a car crash Thursday night at Wheaton Mall. Police say officers saw an Explorer speeding through the parking lot that was endangering pedestrians so they decided to pursue the vehicle.

After they were apprehended, the driver was charged with several counts, including: auto theft and conspiracy to commit auto theft, theft over $1,000, and conspiracy to commit theft over $1,000, unauthorized use of a vehicle and conspiracy to commit unauthorized use of a vehicle, rogue and vagabond, two counts of malicious destruction of property, failure to stop at a red light, reckless driving, speeding, and unsafe lane changing.

There were already outstanding warrants for the driver for commercial burglaries in Montgomery County, Gaithersburg, and Fairfax County.

The passenger was charged with auto theft and conspiracy, theft over $1,000 and conspiracy, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and conspiracy, and two counts of theft under $1,000 and conspiracy.

Both men are being held with bonds: the driver on $50,000, the passenger on $15,000.
